Tattoos on the Heart

I just read “Tattoos on the Heart”, a book about a priest dealing with the Latinos living in the gang infested barrios of Los Angeles.   Then I got an email that complains about how illegally crossing a border into North Korea, Iran, Afghanistan, etc. gets you shot but illegally getting into the US gets you into the lap of luxury (free health care, welfare, etc.).  Anyone who purposely comes into the US illegally must be leaving something very, very bad.  If moving into hell is an upgrade then I don’t want to think about what they are moving from.

Sometimes it just seems like there is no hope for humanity.  Most people in the world are religious and every major religion teaches that you must help the poor and oppressed.  Does anyone live their religion?
